Lost to the Lake: The Disappearance of the Thomas Hume

Photo of the Hackley & Hume lumber schooner Thomas Hume

photo: Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary

The three-masted lumber schooner Thomas Hume disappeared without a trace in May 1891. While most people assumed it sank it during a spring squall on the lake, others suspected sinister behavior by either the lost crew or a passing freighter. And in the 20th century, tales of UFO activity offered up another explanation as to how a ship could vanish on Lake Michigan into seemingly thin air. Learn what really happened to the legendary Thomas Hume on our Lost to the Lake page.

Despite this summer's drought conditions, lakeshore farmers markets still offer a wide array of local produce, plants and baked goods. Visit our
Farmers Markets page to learn when and where to get the freshest goods near you. Most of the markets run through October, while a few stay open well into November.

Lighting the Lake:
Little Sable Point Light

Little Sable Point Light just south of Pentwater is not only an example of a Poe designed lighthouse, but stands as a testament to the determination of the lakeshore communities to provide protection for as much of the western shoreline as possible. Built in 1873, Little Sable Point saw fifteen lighthouse keepers - including a woman - take on the task of keeping the light until the station was automated in 1952. This month we explore the history of Little Sable Point Light and learn exactly what the daily duties of a lighthouse keeper really were. Once you check out this month's Lighting the Lake, don't be surprised if you find yourself driving to Silver Lake Park in order to climb Little Sable Point's Light tower yourself.

As the days grow short and temperatures begin to drop, that outdoor exercise routine may seem less appealing. So along with returning to the neighborhood gym for your daily workout, try adding a yoga routine to help keep fit, relaxed and toned. Nearly every lakeshore town has at least one yoga studio offering sessions year round. Visit our Yoga Studio page and see if there is a yoga teacher somewhere near you. Whether you're looking for classes on Hatha Yoga, Bikram Yoga, Kundalini or Power Yoga, no doubt the lakeshore has a studio tailor made for you. And when the temperature warms up again, you'll be ready for the area's many beach yoga sessions held either at sunrise or sunset. Namaste.
